UNTREATED HEARING LOSS CAN INCREASE THE RISKS OF DEMENTIA ANDDEPRESSION?

Yes, you read that right! Untreated hearing loss can increase the risks of dementia and depression in older adults with hearing loss.

As per the data of world health organization (WHO), the prevalence of hearing loss increases with age. Among those older than 60 years, over 25% are affected by disabling hearing loss i.e., hearing loss greater than 35 decibels (dB) in the better hearing ear. The most common cause of hearing loss in older adults is age related hearing loss, also known as presbycusis.

What is presbycusis?

Presbycusis is the term for sensorineural hearing loss caused due to aging. It occurs due to the degeneration of sensory cells of the inner ear. This type of hearing loss is irreversible and can be progressive in nature.

How to manage presbycusis?

Hearing aids are the gold standard in the treatment of age-related hearing loss. An accurately fitted hearing aid combined with communication strategies can bridge the gap between hearing loss and communication in older adults.

But if left untreated?

Hearing loss in older adults, if left untreated, can lead to dementia, cognitive impairment, and social isolation. A study done at John Hopkins in 2011 reported two to five times more risk of developing dementia depending on the severity of their hearing loss in adults with untreated hearing loss. The communication impairment caused due to hearing loss can lead to social withdrawal which in turn can cause depression. Consistent use of hearing loss will also reduce listening effort and mental fatigue. Use of hearing loss are also linked to a better quality of life in individuals with any degree of haring loss.

So, do not let your hearing loss limit you from leading a healthy and happy life. Book an appointment with your audiologist and get your hearing checked!
